Losing a tooth can feel like a big deal. Maybe it happened suddenly. Maybe it’s been missing for years and you’ve just learned to live with it. Either way, you’re probably wondering what to do next. Two of the most common options are dental implants and fixed bridges. Both can give you back a complete smile. Both can help you eat, speak, and laugh with confidence again. But they work very differently.
At Blevins Dentistry, we want you to feel confident in your choice. So let’s break down the pros and cons of each. By the end, you’ll have a much clearer picture of which path makes sense for you.
What Is a Dental Implant?
Think of a dental implant as a replacement root. We place a small titanium post into your jawbone. Over time, that post fuses with the bone. It becomes a permanent anchor. Then we attach a custom-made crown on top.
The result looks, feels, and functions just like a natural tooth. You brush it like a normal tooth. You floss it like a normal tooth. And you don’t have to think about it. It just works.
Dr. Blevins has placed many Implants right here in our Mullins office. And we use the latest technology to make the process as smooth as possible.
What Is a Fixed Dental Bridge?
A bridge fills the gap left by a missing tooth. But instead of replacing the root, a bridge uses the teeth on either side as anchors.
We prepare those neighboring teeth by removing a small amount of enamel. Then we create a single piece that has crowns on both ends and a false tooth in the middle. That whole piece is cemented into place.
You can’t take it out. It stays in your mouth like your natural teeth. And it does a great job of restoring your smile and your ability to chew.
The Big Differences
Here’s where it gets interesting. Both options work well. But they come with different trade-offs.
- Preserving healthy teeth: With an implant, we leave your neighboring teeth completely untouched. We don’t file them down or change them at all. With a bridge, we must reshape those adjacent teeth. They have to support the bridge, so they lose some of their natural structure.
- Long-term bone health: Your jawbone needs stimulation from tooth roots to stay strong. When a tooth goes missing, that bone starts to shrink. An implant provides that stimulation again. A bridge doesn’t. Over time, the bone under a bridge can continue to recede, which may change the shape of your face or gum line.
- Lifespan: Implants are known for their longevity. With good care, they can last decades, often a lifetime. Bridges typically last ten to fifteen years before they need replacement.
- Cost: We’ll be upfront: implants cost more upfront than bridges. But because implants last longer and protect your bone, many patients find they’re the better investment over time.
Which One Is Right for You?
That depends on your unique situation. We look at a few key factors.
- The health of your jawbone: Implants need enough bone to hold the post securely. If you’ve been missing a tooth for a long time, there may not be enough bone left. That doesn’t rule out implants, bone grafting can help, but it adds time and complexity.
- The health of your neighboring teeth: If those adjacent teeth already have large fillings or crowns, a bridge might be a sensible choice. You’re not sacrificing healthy enamel if those teeth already need work.
- Your budget and timeline: Implants take several months from start to finish. The process includes healing time between steps. Bridges are usually completed in just a few weeks. Some patients prefer the faster route.
- Your personal preference: Some patients love the idea of a permanent, stand-alone solution like an implant. Others feel comfortable with the tried-and-true approach of a bridge. There’s no wrong answer.
